Ms Nina Malherbe, ACSA Head of Baggage Operations receives the
Staff Service Excellence Award Africa |
"Introduced into our 2009 Survey for the first time, the Staff Service Excellence Award is greatly coveted by airports,
because it is a unique recognition of the hard work put in by their customer facing, front-line staff" said Edward Plaisted of Skytrax.
"Staff Service Excellence Awards are voted for by airport customers, and allow these users to have a
real impact in deciding which airport's front-line staff deserve special recognition. The Staff Service Excellence awards encompass all the potential service touchpoints through the airport experience - this might
be security or immigration procedures, service in a shop or food outlet, or staff cleaning the washrooms. These are all people related aspects of service, where in reality it costs
nothing extra for staff to be helpful, polite and friendly ... and yet as our survey results highlight, some airports deliver much higher standards than others in this area. In seeking to maximise customer satisfaction and
encourage passengers to want to use an airport again, the Quality of front line service is critical. It is the quality of service experience that has the greatest impact on post-travel assessment of an airport, and why we place such importance on this element" added Plaisted.

1. Cape Town International Airport
Cape Town International Airport is Africa’s 3rd largest airport, located approximately 20 kms from the city
centre. It is also Africa’s premier tourist and VIP destination and has established a reputation as Africa’s
premier international award-winning airport, consistently performing among the best in the world for service
in its category. The terminal building has a split-level design, with departures located in the upper floors
and arrivals in the lower floors. All check-in takes place within the Central Terminal Building. The terminal
contains 10 air bridges, split between domestic and international usage. Retail within the terminal building
is located on the upper level above the departures level. The terminal also has a viewing deck, located on the
upper level.
2. OR Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg
OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) in Johannesburg is the air transport hub of Southern Africa, catering
for more than 17 million passengers each year. With more than 18,000 people employed by various companies at
ORTIA, the airport plays a vital role in the city's and Gauteng province's economy, and boasts an impressive
infrastructure that has expanded by thousands of square metres from its modest origins. In October 2006 the
country’s flagship airport was renamed as a tribute to one of the new South Africa’s most important founding
fathers. Oliver Reginald Tambo, fondly known as O.R. by his peers, is renowned in South Africa and abroad for
his significant contribution to the liberation of South Africa. He was president of the African National
Congress (ANC) for 30 years and spent much of this time in exile, mobilising international support for the ANC
and opposition to the apartheid movement. “There is no one more deserving of such an accolade than Mr Tambo
and ACSA is honoured that our flagship airport, our international gateway, has been chosen to bear his name as
a tribute to him,” says Monhla Hlahla, ACSA’s Managing Director.
3. King Shaka International Airport
King Shaka International Airport, also known as La Mercy Airport is the primary airport serving Durban, South
Africa. Located at La Mercy, approximately 35 kilometres (22 mi) north of the city centre of Durban, it opened
its doors to passengers on May 1, 2010. The airport is named after Shaka, leader of the Zulu nation in the
early 19th century.
