Quality for departure, arrival and transit, including terminal facilities, comfort and cleanliness, security and immigration services,

Mr Javier Ferrari (right), Technical Manager TAGSA receives the Best Regional Airport South America award |
Best Regional Airport Awards recognises airports (sometimes smaller airports) that are delivering the highest levels of service and customer satisfaction. The definition of a regional airport is variable around the world, but for the survey results, a regional airport is normally not a capital city airport, and is not a major hub serving long haul intercontinental routes.
Many regional airports covered in the survey handle a substantial number of passengers, but concentrate primarily on short to medium haul routes.
Guayaquil Airport has been named Best Regional Airport in South America at the 2011 World Airport Awards. The passenger survey asked
customers to rate the quality of service and airport facilities across 39 key performance indicators. In 2nd place is
Rio de Janeiro Airport, ahead of Caracas Airport in 3rd.

1. GUAYAQUIL AIRPORT
The airport is located 5 km north of Guayaquil's centre, known as José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport. The airport was named after
José Joaquín de Olmedo, a notable Ecuadorian poet, first mayor of the city of Guayaquil and former president of Ecuador. It was formerly known as Simón Bolívar International Airport.
The airport, which has the newest terminal in Ecuador, was renamed after José Joaquín de Olmedo in 2006, in preparation for the inauguration of the
new 50,000 sq. meter national and international terminal on 27 July 2006. Although there was an inaugural flight in July 2006, most airlines did not
operate completely from the new terminal 13 August 2006. After that date, the old terminal was closed and it was later turned into a convention center.
2. RIO DE JANEIRO AIRPORT
The main gateway to Brazil is Galeão Antonio Carlos airport, located 20 km north of Rio, on Governor's Island
in Guanabara Bay. There are two terminals at the airport, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. The two terminals are not
far apart and are connected by a travelator. For dining and snacking, several restaurants are available in
Terminal 1 and numerous restaurants and cafés are also located in Terminal 2's central commercial area.
3. CARACAS AIRPORT
Caracas Simon Bolivar Airport is located in Maiquetia, 20 kilometers from Caracas. It is a modern airport,
with all the facilities that you would expect in an international airport. It has three terminals:
International, Domestic and Auxiliary. From Maiquetía you can fly to the main cities in Venezuela, and in
South America, Central America and North America. There are also several daily non-stop flights to Europe
(Lisbon, Madrid, Paris, Rome, Frankfurt)
