Amsterdam Schiphol Airport has been named Best Airport in Western Europe at the 2011 World Airport Awards. The passenger survey asked
customers to rate the quality of service and airport facilities across 39 key performance indicators.
In 2nd place is London Heathrow Airport, ahead of London City Airport in 3rd.
"We are extremely pleased and proud with the Award. It is an important award for us because
passengers have named us the best airport in Western Europe. This is also an additional
incentive to our ambition to be Europe's preferred airport "said Mark Lakerveld of Amsterdam
Schiphol.

1. AMSTERDAM SCHIPHOL AIRPORT
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is located 9.1 kms southwest of Amsterdam city centre. Schiphol is an important
European airport, ranking as Europe’s 5th largest and the world's 15th largest by total passenger traffic. It
also ranks as the world’s 6th largest by international passenger traffic. e airport is built as one large
terminal, split into three large departure halls, which converge again once airside. The most recent of these
was completed in 1994, and expanded in 2007 with a new part, named Terminal 4, although this part is not
recognised as a separate building. Plans for further terminal expansion exist, including the construction of a
separate new terminal between the Zwanenburgbaan and Polderbaan runways that would end the one-terminal
concept.
2. LONDON HEATHROW AIRPORT
London Heathrow serves some 180 destinations in more than 90 countries. London Heathrow Airport is the busiest
airport in the UK, the fourth busiest in the world (2010) in terms of total passenger traffic and it handles
more international passengers than any other airport in the world. Today Heathrow is the world’s busiest
international airport and the hub of the civil aviation world. Over 67 million passengers travel through the
airport annually on services offered by 90 airlines travelling to over 180 destinations in over 90 countries.
By the time Heathrow celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2006 it had handled around 1.4 billion passengers on
over 14 million flights. The start of operations at Terminal 5 in March 2008 marked the beginning of an
exciting new chapter for Heathrow. Future developments include the construction of Terminal 2A to replace
Terminals 1 and 2 and the redevelopment of Terminals 3 and 4.
3. LONDON CITY AIRPORT
The only airport actually in London, London City Airport is less than a mile from world-class events venue
ExCeL London; just two miles from the site of the 2012 Olympic Games; three miles from Canary Wharf and six
miles from the City of London. Passengers travelling to and from the airport enjoy fast transfers on the
Docklands Light Railway (DLR) with a journey time of 22 minutes to Bank and 14 minutes to Poplar (connecting
to Canary Wharf). The airport’s location is on the doorstep of London’s financial district is considered vital
to business and plays an integral part in keeping up with the growth of the UK’s capital city. London City
Airport receives considerable support from the business community who recognise the convenient location and
ease of use with faster check-in times than any other London airport. London City Airport boasts the lowest
check-in times compared to any other airport in London. The Departure Lounge at London City Airport utilises
soft, warm materials including timber and polished limestone floors; marble surfaces and leather seating
throughout. By observing the needs of passengers, London City Airport has configured the departure lounge with
numerous laptop plug-in points and complimentary Wi-Fi access. The lounge offers passengers an uncluttered
environment where they can continue to work using smartphone devices or laptops, or relax in tranquility with
the ‘silent departure lounge policy of no tannoy announcements or boarding calls.

Hong Kong International Airport was named the Worlds Best Airport by air
travellers across the globe. A favourite of travellers worldwide, Changi Airport Singapore was a close runner up ranking 2nd in 2011. Incheon International Airport, the winner in 2009 was
also in close contention, in 3rd place. Munich Airport ranked 4th in the world and won the
Best Airport Europe title. Beijing Capital Airport continued its improvement in the global ratings, also named
Best Airport China. Amsterdam Schiphol Airport was 6th,
winning Best Airport Western Europe. Zurich Airport ranked 7th, Auckland Airport was
Best Airport Australia/Pacific and 8th worldwide.
Kuala Lumpur ranked in 9th, winning the Best Immigration category. Copenhagen Airport enters the Top 10 ranking and named
Best Airport Northern Europe. |
