Barcelona International Airport has been named Best Airport in Southern Europe at the 2011 World Airport Awards. The passenger survey asked
customers to rate the quality of service and airport facilities across 39 key performance indicators. In 2nd place is
Madrid Barajas Airport, ahead of Athens International Airport in 3rd.

1. BARCELONA AIRPORT
Barcelona Airport is located 12 km southwest from Barcelona. The airport is the second largest in Spain behind
Madrid Barajas Airport. In 2010, over 29.2 million passengers used Barcelona Airport, making it the 10th
busiest airport in Europe. The new Terminal 1 was inaugurated in June 2009. Terminal 1 has got an area of
544,066 m2. Its facilities include 168 check-in counters, 60 jetways. The forecast is that the airport will be
able to handle 55 million passengers annually and will reach 90 operations an hour.
2. MADRID AIRPORT
Madrid-Barajas Airport is the main international airport serving Madrid. In 2010, over 49.8 million passengers
used Madrid Barajas, making it the country's largest and busiest airport, and in 2009 it was the world's 11th
busiest airport and Europe's fourth busiest airport. Terminal 4 was inaugurated February 2006, and is is one
of the world's largest airport terminals in terms of area, with 760,000 square meters in separate landside and
airside structures. It consists of a main building and a satellite building, which are approximately 2.5 km
apart. With this new addition, Barajas is designed to handle 70 million passengers annually.
3. ATHENS AIRPORT
thens Airport was opened in March 2001 to replace the now closed Athens Ellinikon Airport. The airport is
located between Markopoulo, Koropi, Spata and Loutsa, about 20 km to the east of central Athens. The airport
has two terminals - the Main Terminal, and Satellite Terminal accessible by a foot-tunnel from the Main
Terminal. A new above ground link to the midfield satellite terminal is under construction. The airport is
designed to be upgraded in coming years, and upgrades are planned in a six-phase framework. The first phase
allowed the airport to accommodate 16 million passengers a year, but was upgraded to 21 million passengers a
year. The sixth phase will allow the airport to accommodate as many as 50 million passengers a year.

Hong Kong International Airport was named the Worlds Best Airport by air
travellers across the globe. A favourite of travellers worldwide, Changi Airport Singapore was a close runner up ranking 2nd in 2011. Incheon International Airport, the winner in 2009 was
also in close contention, in 3rd place. Munich Airport ranked 4th in the world and won the
Best Airport Europe title. Beijing Capital Airport continued its improvement in the global ratings, also named
Best Airport China. Amsterdam Schiphol Airport was 6th,
winning Best Airport Western Europe. Zurich Airport ranked 7th, Auckland Airport was
Best Airport Australia/Pacific and 8th worldwide.
Kuala Lumpur ranked in 9th, winning the Best Immigration category. Copenhagen Airport enters the Top 10 ranking and named
Best Airport Northern Europe. |
